In Defense of Political Apathy

I know it’s wrong of me not to give a shit about the recent shootings in Atlanta, and the rise in Asian American hate crimes, misogyny, and lurid Incel fetishism, but my heart is just wrung out. Not one drop of moral outrage or political activism is left in my heart.

I wish it would all just go away.

And you know what? It does go away if you don’t pay attention to it.

The world is a horrible place filled with horrible people doing horrible things.

Why this should be news to anyone is beyond me.

And I just can’t anymore.

I can’t. I can’t. I can’t.

Meanwhile, the BBC decided what the world needs now is a three-hour remake of Black Narcissus.

Of course, I had to track it down and watch it.

It’s kinda like The Shining! With nuns!

Deviates in several crucial plot points from the P&P movie. Which, in turn, was derived from a novel by a once-popular writer who these days is best known for having inspired the weird name of some celebrity spawn. Sic transit.

I have no way of knowing which set of filmed plot points is closer to the source material, and I don’t much care.

I watched it in between the timed segments of an online Defensive Driving class, which promises to lower my auto insurance by a full 10%—such a scam! It’s a ridiculous course that nobody will get anything out of, and why the State of New York is pretending that anyone will is another thing that’s beyond me.

So many things beyond me!

Spoke to Ichabod first thing in the morning.

He is already putting in 13-hour days.

“If you keep putting in 13-hour days, you will quickly burn out, and that won’t be good for your clients,” I pointed out in my supportive maternal way.

Spoke to Nafisa later in the morning.

Her mother in Sudan has Covid. Her aunt just died of it.

Apart from that, it rained and rained and rained. Remunerative Work Project #3 is terribly written. I had to forcibly restrain myself from rewriting it! The client is not paying you for content editing! I reminded myself sternly. The client is only paying you for copyediting!

The client thinks she can write! Which is… disturbing.

But what the hell.

Writing is probably an overestimated talent.

I can write.

And look where that’s gotten me! 😊

Today, blue has returned the sky, and the sun is out. Blustery, and hideously cold, but temps are on an upward climb throughout the day, so I will get out.

Tomorrow spring is official.

And it’s supposed to be much warmer.
