The 411 is 66

There’s a great line from Chicago – one of my favorite musicals: “I’m older than I ever intended to be!”

Today’s my birthday.

And I’m 66!

Sixty-six sounds incredibly old to me, but I don’t feel so very old – which is what all old people say, I suppose: Whoever feels older than 30?

In my case, I’d have to say I feel closer to myself at age 12 than I feel to myself at age 30. Twelve was a good age for me. The incredible whammy of great beauty had not yet hit; I was free to think my own thoughts without the constant annoyance of social anxiety – Well, what will other people think? Do other people like you? – because I honestly did not give a fuck what other people thought. My soul mates were either fictional characters or dead people.

At 12, I was in the 8th grade and had just started at Hunter. (Our 50th reunion is coming up in June! Can you imagine?) I wrote a poem for an English class; my English teacher told me, “This is one of the best things I have ever read.”

I wanted to think he was serious, but I had to assume he’d read Shakespeare, so he couldn’t possibly have been.

He was encouraging, and that encouragement took.

All I can remember from that poem:

Something… something…
…to be a little girl again and to be allowed to be afraid of the dark.
It is raining now, and the birds have all gone in

The poem rhymed.

Twelve was the age I began keeping a diary. This diary, which has survived - more or less intact - for 54 years.

I suppose that makes this diary a historical document of some sort. Valuable in context.

It’s certainly detailed.

In a couple of days I’m off to NYC for a week, and that’s where I plan to do my celebrating. City of my birth! Social encounters booked; museum jaunts planned. I’m seriously thinking of seeing My Fair Lady at Lincoln Center, and that will take bucks. I’m also about 90% certain that I’m gonna buy those shoes, which as I say, are hideously expensive.

Both these things argue for an economical day today!

And it’s certainly gorgeous out right now. I could spend the day hiking by the river, and it wouldn’t cost a cent.

By the time I’m in New York, it will be in the 70s.

I was born in New York, too, at St. Vincent's in the Village! I'm not sure it's still there.

My personal stuck-age is 31. I look in the mirror and think, What happened to my eyes, there? What is wrong with my skin? Although, with you, I feel there's a strong admixture of 13 year old as well.

St. Vincent's in the Village

Closed. If the building hasn't been torn down, I'd guess it's being converted into condos.

Happy Birthday! I hope you enjoy your time in NY. My Aunt G is 81 and she still can rock her suit and outshine the rest us. She will gamble all night and fly home the next morning without a nap so IMHO at 66 you are just getting started.

Happy Birthday! (Your 'card' is on my lj.) Enjoy your time in the city, it should be fun.
Age is just a number, it really is how you feel that matters.

Eighth grade was one of my favorites years in school. Maybe my very favorite.

Happy Birthday!

The odds don't suggest you'll eclipse Ms. Jeanne Clement, but obviously some people do sail on to very advanced age — were they more likely to be the ones who expected to?

Whether it affects actual longevity or not, I think people who don't keep looking down the road and contemplating who they'll be and what they'll be doing when they're older, sooner or later reach an age they hadn't even thought they'd be. And they seem to find it bewildering.
