The Big Bright Glittering Ball

It’s -7° out. MINUS SEVEN DEGREES! I don’t think I’ve ever been somewhere where it was -7° before, not even when I was lost in a blizzard in Yosemite for three days and had to be airlifted out by helicopter.

The Meezer is pissed because I won’t let her outside.

###

A million people gathered in Times Square to watch Mariah Carey lip-synch and the big New Years Eve ball come down. Tourists, of course. Nobody who lives here would put themselves through that. Locked in a police pen for 12 hours? No place to pee? Freezing cold? Half a day of intense boredom for maybe ten minutes of orgiastic release?

I don’t get it.

I’m not being judgmental here.

I’d sincerely like to understand: What’s the allure?

I'm with you on the Times Square thing, or any crowd really in any temperature. But alas, I am in the desert where the sun is shining and it's presently 71 degrees.

I don't get crowds at things like that, either. Especially when it's cold. I could be somewhere having fun :)

I agree, I can't even fathom anyone wanting to spend their entire day in the cold, in a huge crowd like that. It's my worst nightmare!

i think people need a marker for group continuance. Like prom, or something that marks the passage of time so that the group consciousness can be like, ok its now 2018.

Oh, I'm not disputing the significance of New Year's Eve celebrations.

I'm disputing the significance of standing in ugly Times Square for 12 hours in sub-zero weather.

Yes I get that; but the connective tissue that I assumed was understood is that this effort/pain is part of what builds it up to that orgiastic marker. Its kinda messed but its kind of like "if it's too easy then its not meaningful" like how one party in a relationship or how a salesperson will play these games of making it hard so when it happens it is more valuable.

Oh, I think you're overthinking it.

These are tourists who've been fed a storyline in which watching the Big Glittery Ball drop is a Meaningful Experience just like they're fed storylines in which buying the latest iPhone is a Meaningful Experience. The real rush is taking selfies they can post on Facebook. :-)

If you say so. But I don't really see how what you are saying is all that different from what I've said.
